A small amount of water around a water heater can come from several sources, but active leaking should never be ignored. Water can damage flooring and walls, and contact with electrical components or a gas appliance creates additional hazards. The safest response depends on where the water is coming from and whether you can reach the shutoffs without entering a wet or unsafe area.
Keep people away from electrical and hot-water hazards
Do not stand in water to reach an electrical panel, disconnect, or appliance control. Keep children and pets away from the area. Water from the tank or piping may be hot enough to burn.
If there is sparking, smoke, a burning smell, or water contacting energized equipment, leave the area and contact emergency services or the appropriate utility when conditions warrant it.
Stop the water only when it is safe
If the cold-water shutoff above the heater is clearly identified, dry, accessible, and turns normally, closing it can reduce continued leakage. Do not force a seized valve. If the valve is inaccessible or water is near electrical equipment, wait for a qualified professional.
A home main-water shutoff may be the safer option for a major leak when everyone in the household knows its location and operation. Remember that shutting off water affects fixtures and appliances throughout the building.
Do not operate a damaged heater
An electric water heater should not remain energized if the tank is no longer full. A gas water heater with a suspected gas leak, damaged vent, or flooded controls needs professional attention. Do not relight burners, remove access panels, bypass safety controls, or attempt internal repairs.
If you smell gas, leave the building without operating switches or creating a flame and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
Identify the visible source without taking it apart
From a safe, dry location, note whether water appears near a pipe connection, the temperature-and-pressure relief discharge pipe, the drain valve, the top of the unit, or the bottom seam of the tank. Condensation or a nearby drain line can also be mistaken for a tank leak.
A technician will need to determine whether a fitting can be repaired or whether the tank itself has failed. A leak from the tank body or bottom seam often indicates that replacement should be considered.

- Note the model and serial number if the label is safely visible.
- Record whether the leak is constant or appears only during heating.
- Mention recent plumbing work, pressure changes, or unusual noises.
Reduce damage while waiting for service
Move belongings away from the leak if you can do so safely. Use towels or a wet vacuum only in areas free of electrical danger. Do not cap or plug a temperature-and-pressure relief discharge line.
After the immediate repair, ask about the condition of the shutoff valve, drain pan, discharge piping, water pressure, expansion control, and whether a leak alarm or automatic shutoff makes sense for the installation.
