When an air conditioner is running but the house keeps getting warmer, the cause can range from a simple airflow restriction to a refrigerant or electrical problem. Start with the thermostat

Check the filter and return-air path
A heavily loaded filter restricts airflow. That can reduce cooling performance and may contribute to ice forming on the indoor coil. Replace a visibly dirty disposable filter with the size and type recommended for the system.
Make sure return grilles are not blocked by furniture, rugs, boxes, or curtains. Keep supply registers open unless an HVAC professional has specifically balanced the system another way.

Weak airflow, visible ice on the insulated refrigerant line, or water around the indoor equipment after long run times can indicate a frozen coil. Continuing to run cooling can make the ice buildup worse.
Turn cooling off and leave the fan on only if it is moving air normally and there is no electrical or water hazard. Do not chip ice from the coil or refrigerant line. Melting can take several hours, and the underlying airflow or refrigerant issue still needs to be corrected.
Call promptly when the symptoms are serious
Stop the system and request service if you smell burning, hear harsh mechanical noises, see water near electrical components, or find a breaker that trips again after one reset. Homes with older adults, infants, pets, or anyone sensitive to heat may need a faster backup cooling plan while repairs are arranged.
